Chiang Mai has remained my top choice for travel up to this point. I first came across the city in 2013 and have returned seven times since then. As Thailand’s second largest city, it boasts a rich Lanna culture that captivates me. I enjoy getting lost in the maze of alleys within the ancient walls, always finding new treasures to explore. The atmosphere in the old city is laid-back, embodying a ‘take it easy’ way of life. Chiang Mai is home to numerous Buddhist temples waiting to be discovered both in and around the city.

I take pleasure in exploring the night markets, a popular attraction among tourists. While some visitors are drawn to shopping, I personally enjoy the diverse selection of local cuisine and snacks. The mountainous terrain in northern Thailand provides ample opportunities for hiking and trekking on various trails. Notably, Chiang Mai hosted the World Mountain & Trail Running Championships 2022. During my visits to Chiang Mai, I frequently engage in off-road and on-road cycling, regular running sessions, as well as guided hikes through the scenic landscapes.

The people of Chiang Mai are very friendly, courteous, and warm. It is always a joy to pick up some local phrases and engage in conversations with vendors selling juice or coffee. Although their English may not be fluent, they always make the effort to listen and try to converse.

I take pleasure in long drives to the rural outskirts and nearby villages. Throughout Chiang Mai’s old city center, there is no shortage of tour companies providing a wide array of excursions and experiences. In the evenings after a long day of walking or activities, I like to relax with a foot massage followed by a delicious Thai meal.

Chiang Mai offers a mix of Southeast Asian culture and is known for its safety. Local cuisine, lodging, and transportation are budget-friendly. You can experience the traditional way of life within the old city walls and also explore modern amenities like fancy restaurants and bars located just outside the old city.
