Discovering Mauritius: A Drive Through Paradise

One of the best ways to explore Mauritius is by renting a car and driving around. The island has well-maintained roads, and driving is on the left side. A road trip will take you through charming villages, scenic coastal routes, and bustling town centers.

Driving Along the Northern and Eastern Coasts

Start your journey from the north, where the main tourist hubs, Grand Baie and Pereybere, are located. These areas are known for their vibrant nightlife, restaurants, and beautiful beaches. From here, take a drive further north and discover picturesque villages with stunning coastal views.

Then, head towards the east coast, one of the most untouched and local regions of Mauritius. Drive along this peaceful coastline, where you will witness the laid-back lifestyle of the locals, charming fishing villages, and breathtaking ocean views. Make sure to stop along the way to capture some beautiful moments. A must-visit is Bois des Amourettes, where you can walk along the waterfront and admire the stunning jetty. History lovers should not miss the museum at Vieux Grand Port, an important historical site. Further south, the scenic road of Ferney offers a fantastic drive through lush greenery and mountainous landscapes.

Exploring the West Coast and the Black River Gorges

For a different experience, spend a few days in Flic en Flac on the west coast. It is one of the most popular beach destinations, with soft white sand and crystal-clear waters.

Exploring the Central Region and Port Louis

If you have time, take a drive from Flic en Flac to the town of Quatre Bornes. On Thursdays and Sundays, you can visit the biggest non-food market on the island, where you can find clothing, accessories, and souvenirs at great prices. Within a short drive, you will find four major shopping malls for those who love retail therapy.

A visit to Mauritius wouldn’t be complete without spending a full day in Port Louis, the capital city. Park at the Caudan Waterfront and explore the vibrant streets of the city on foot. Visit the bustling Central Market, explore the history at the museums, and experience the lively atmosphere of Victoria Square, where the main bus and metro terminals are located. Walking through the old streets of Port Louis, you will discover beautiful colonial buildings, temples, mosques, and hidden alleyways full of character.

A Scenic Drive – Verdun

Finally, if you are driving from the north towards the central part of Mauritius, take the scenic Verdun road (motorway). This drive offers breathtaking mountain views and fresh countryside air. For an even better experience, take small detours to explore nearby villages like Creve Coeur, Long Mountain, and Les Mariannes. The viewpoints in this region offer some of the most spectacular landscapes on the island.
