I finally made it to Lampang last month, a place that had been on my list for ages. I can’t express how happy I am that I visited! From the moment I arrived, I felt like I’d stepped into a different era. Lampang, with its quiet streets and gentle pace, instantly won my heart.
This small, traditional town is a hidden gem, full of charm. The locals are incredibly kind and laid-back, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that the town wasn’t overrun with tourists. While I did spot a few during the day, they seemed to be passing through, likely on a day trip from Chiang Mai. But to truly appreciate Lampang, you need to stay, soak in the atmosphere, and take things slow.
One of the highlights for me was exploring the old houses, each with its own unique architecture, reflecting the town’s rich history. Wandering through the streets, I stumbled upon many traditional handcraft shops and tailors—not the flashy, 24-hour suit makers you find in tourist spots, but authentic workshops that have likely been there for generations.
Along the river, I found a few beautifully decorated coffee shops, their gardens opening up to peaceful riverside views. Sitting there, sipping my coffee, I couldn’t help but feel at ease, completely absorbed by the calmness of the place.
Of course, Lampang is also known for its temples, and I couldn’t resist visiting Wat Pratu Pong, one of the oldest. The intricate woodwork and traditional Lanna architecture left me in awe. The temple is part of a cultural area, where I also came across a small market selling local goods—a perfect spot to immerse yourself in Lampang’s culture.
One thing that stood out to me was the sight of horse-drawn carriages, a rare and charming way to explore the town. The rides take you from the center to the cultural area, with plenty to admire along the way.
What I loved most about Lampang is the slower pace of life. People here take their time, and there’s a serene, unhurried feel to the whole town. If you find yourself in Chiang Mai with a few days to spare, I highly recommend making the short journey to Lampang. It’s an experience you won’t forget.
