Pai is a little gem of a town located in Mae Hong Son province, about 150 km from Chiang Mai. The trip to Pai is famous for its 762 winding curves, which can be challenging for some travelers.
Known as a hippie village, Pai is popular among backpackers for its laid-back and peaceful vibe. The small town center is perfect for enjoying street food and drinks in one of the many bars at night.
The hilly landscape around Pai offers stunning views, which I enjoyed while having a meal or coffee at one of the local spots. I recommend renting a bicycle to explore the town if your hotel doesn’t provide one.
There are many tourist spots around Pai, and you can book tours with local operators. On my first visit in 2016, I took a half-day tour by private car. In 2019, I went trekking in the farming village of Soppong, about 50 km from Pai.
The Mae Hong Son loop, about 600 km long, is famous for its picturesque and breathtaking scenery. It’s a must-do for motorbike explorers. You can plan a 3-5 day trip and stay in villages along the way.
Most hotels in Chiang Mai and local tour operators can help you get tickets to Pai. They will pick you up from your hotel and take you to the bus station, where you can catch a minibus or van to Pai.
